What Is This

The number of insurance carriers participating in the ACA Marketplaces within each state. Information is compiled from an analysis of insurer rate filings to state regulators.

Why It's Important

Competition for health insurance within states should result in higher levels of care and lower premium prices. In 2014 the Affordable Care Act health insurance marketplaces opened. Since then, the Marketplace has seen a number of changes including insurers that have entered and exited states and also changed their geographic coverage within states.

Trend

Ranking 10th, Pennsylvania has a greater number of insurers participating in the Marketplace compared to the national median of 3. While the number of insurers participating in Pennsylvania has declined from a peak of 8 to currently 5, other states have had greater declines in participation. Nearly all states with 4 or more insurers participating at their peak have seen a decline in the last 2 to 3 years. New York has the greatest participation with 12 insurers, down from a high of 16.
