Total number of community hospitals, which represent 85% of all hospitals. Federal hospitals, long term care hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, institutions for people with intellectual disabilities, and alcoholism and other chemical dependency hospitals are not included.

Why It's Important

The number of hospitals per 100,000 population is an indicator of the availability of health care and may be inversely related to population density.

Trend

The number of community hospitals has fairly consistent from 2009 to 2016, with a slight downward trend in Pennsylvania’s number of hospitals per 100,000 population. From 2016 to 2017, many states had an increase in number of hospitals. The median number of hospitals increased from 1.67 to 1.84. In Pennsylvania, the number of hospitals increased to 201 in 2017 from 184 in 2016. Pennsylvania’s ranking of 31st may reveal more about the size or composition of Pennsylvania’s hospitals than the availability of hospital services.
