Data include staffed beds for community hospitals, which represent 85% of all hospitals, per 1,000 population. Federal hospitals, long term care hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, institutions for people with intellectual disabilities, and alcoholism and other chemical dependency hospitals are not included.

Why It's Important

Because it is a measure of capacity, the number of community hospital staffed beds per 1,000 population controls for the size of hospitals and shows a more robust resource than observed in the simple count of community hospitals.

Trend

Pennsylvania ranks 16th on this metric, with a resource level of 2.9 staffed beds per 1,000 population, that has dropped by 0.2 over a five year period. The median has remained steady for 2017 at 2.5 staffed community hospital beds per 1,000 population.
