Percentage of public school students scoring at or above proficiency achievement level for reading, grade 8, by year, jurisdiction, for all students on National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Reading tests for 2017.

Why It's Important

A measure of the quality of the education and a projection of reading proficiency of the future workforce.

Trend

Pennsylvania’s ranking dropped from 5th to 9th between 2009 and 2017, while the percentage of Pennsylvania 8th graders proficient in reading remained consistently around 40%. The median value among the states increased from 32.56% to 35.5% during the same time frame. In the year 2011, Pennsylvania proficiency scores dipped to 37.96%, dropping the ranking to 11th among the states.
