Trend

Pennsylvania 8th graders are among the nation’s leaders in math proficiency, ranking 10th in 2009, moving up to 7th in the state-by-state rankings by 2013, then back down to 13th in 2017. In real terms, 8th grade math proficiency in Pennsylvania declined from 39.85% achieving proficiency in 2009 to 38% in 2017. The median math proficiency also decreased slightly over the same period, from 34.88% in 2009 to 34% in 2017.
